THE FIRST INTERNAL COLONY :: capital gained // through flame soaked stakes // prerequisite finance // to develop industrial states // the millions of charred // forgotten bones towered // excess population // with dangerous ideas of power :: CHORUS: songs of pain and songs of fire // reaching heavens from the choir // their fruitless faith in gods mighty powers // unprotected in their final hours // songs of thanks and songs of fire // honoring our grandmothers’ power // our vengeance burns higher and higher // we’ll stack their faith on a funeral pyre :: widows, unmarried, beguines for faith // merchants and landowners // all laid to waste // divine greed stole // land and souls // justifying their horrors // by their god’s almighty word :: CHORUS ::
This song is based off the book Night-Vision: Illuminating War and Class on the Neo-Colonial Terrain by Butch Lee. She writes about the understanding that the "witch hunts" were really about pre-capitalist accumulation of wealth and resources. Many women inherited land and resources because of the many crusades and wars which killed off men, many became involved with the Beguine movement which was a communistic christian movement for women that valued shared property, and vowing never to marry. Often the women massacred for being witches were those who had attained a sense of independence through this or who had never bought into the christian hegemony. These were a threat to the existing system and the massive wealth gathered from this massacre of millions of women aided in the church and feudal lords to begin lending money and financing "new world" conquests.
